Blooming Chives

Did you know chives bloom? Besides its many culinary uses, it also has lovely blooms.

Chives are the smallest member of the onion family. And the only member of the onion family that is native to both the Old World and the New World. It also has insect-repelling properties and is used in gardens to control pests.

Chives have been culitivated in Europe since the Middle Ages, but may have been grown as much as 5000 years ago. My mom gave me this plant, and although I rarely use it for cooking, I do enjoy its blooms in the spring.

Mine are not yet blooming but I have cut some for scrambled eggs. Love the chives.

  2. Very neat! We have some but it hasn’t bloomed yet. We had some flower one year but it didn’t look nearly as nice as yours!

Mine didn’t bloom like this last year. And I haven’t done anthing to it, but it must just be a happy camper this year for whatever reason. Thanks for stopping by!

I have some garlic chives and I just love those pretty blooms! Your pictures are beautiful. I do eat the chives – on scrambled eggs, baked potatoes, and a few other things. But I do agree with you that seeing them bloom is the best!

They are beautiful. I always like letting them bloom, but I was surprised when my garlic chives sprang up all over the next spring.

  5. Just found your site and love those photo’s of your chives. So envious, I have one tiny little pot of them.
I use the flowers in salads. Just break up the flower and toss on top. They have a wonderful crunchy texture and oniony taste, the colour looks great in a green salad and everyone is curious about it.
