Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

  1. Hello! I found your site thru “A Gardener in Progress.” I just finished spending a little time touring your farm, checking the fields, watching the calves and admiring your garden. You take very nice photos. Your step by step recipes are awesome. Do you read http://www.thepioneerwoman.com? I’m a farm girl now living in the “big city.” I’ll be back to see how your garden and those calves grow! Have a good day.

      Gardener on Sherlock Street,
Thank you for taking a “tour” of the farm. I’ll have more posts about the growing calves soon. I noticed the wheat has headed in the last couple days, so when it stops raining, I’ll get some pics and do a post about it too. I do check in on the Pioneer Woman most every day. Love her blog.
      Take care!

The weather has been perfect for growing greens. Enjoy your colorful plate!

      Glenda,
The weather has been good, just need some sun now. Been raining here all week.
      Thank you for stopping by.

It looks so good! It’s so fun to be able to pick and eat things fresh from the garden. I’ll be planting our lettuce seeds for the third time soon. First the birds got the seeds, then the slugs got the seedlings. Maybe next time the birds will get the slugs and leave the lettuce for us.

    • Suzanne says:

      Catherine,
Sorry to hear that the lettuce has been a trial for you. Maybe 3rd time will be the charm?
      Take care,
      Suzanne

It looks wonderful! I’m hoping for a few days of dry weather so I can get my garden in.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Teresa,
Been raining here a lot too this week. Might be sunny here tomorrow. I’m gonna lay out on a rock and bask like a lizard. :o)

  5. All of my garden is in, but not close enough for sampling yet. I so want some fresh cucumbers and tomatoes! I haven’t planted lettuce, and it was a good thing, we had a big frost here sunday and we had every sheet in the house over the garden. I will be putting out my lettuce as soon as it stops raining.

      CattleCallFarm,
We were lucky this year in that it was dry when it was time to plant, and it’s been raining since. Most years we have to mud things in. Thanks for visiting!

Isn’t it just fascinating how seeds germinate and become something beautiful? We use to have a nice sized garden every year but not so much now. In fact not at all now except tomatoes for Bobs Fried Green ones. Thanks so much for stopping by, I love the company!

      Hello RainGardener,
Thank you for visiting. Growing a garden takes faith, and the reward justifies the faith. Happy Gardening.

  7. Oh my goodness! If those photos don’t motivate people to start their own vegetable garden, I don’t know what will 🙂

    • Suzanne says:

      Hello Noelle,
I hope they inspire people to garden. You won’t get fresher veggies than from your own garden.
      Thanks for visiting.

Cool! I also love picking my salad greens.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Nicole,
Isn’t it just a great feeling to harvest something from your own soil, and incorporate it into your meals?
      Have a great day!

  9. Raja says:

    Hmm… That’s yum 🙂

    • Suzanne says:

      Hello Raja,
Glad you stopped by. The sun finally came out here yesterday for the first time in days, so the lettuce is growing like a weed today. More salad tonight!
      Take care.

  10. I picked one more post to read before going back to work. I chose this because lettuce, spinach, and salad mixes are my favorites to grow and eat. I love the way you showed the seeds, seedlings, and salad.
