Chase County Waterfalls

About a year ago in June, Harland and I took a road trip down to Chase County in Kansas. The county lake there has a waterfall we love to visit. So today, since the ongoing heatwave seems to have no end in sight, I thought I’d share some pictures of the waterfalls with you. Think cool thoughts everyone.

The outflow of the lake goes into Prather Creek and that is where the waterfall is located.

The drop of the falls is about 40 feet, and the pool at the base of the falls is about knee deep, perfect for wading.

Further downstream there are a few smaller falls, with drops of less than 10 feet.

Don’t you just love to watch the movement of water?

Of couse, no visit to a body of water would be complete without seeing a resident damselfly. This is a male Ebony Jewelwing.

Hope these pics give those of you suffering under the broiler some relief.

Take care all, and have a great weekend. Stay cool!

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

So beautiful. And cooling! Thanks for the moments of respite from the heat. 🙂

  2. Love the pictures! The dragonfly is exceptional! Lovely!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful right now to just float in that refreshing pool? Temperatures here got to around 100 yesterday. Your pictures, Suzanne, are really beautiful, both today’s and the wonderful horse pictures yesterday. Thanks so much – have a good weekend.

      Hi Vivian,
Yes, I wish I was floating in the pool today. It was so blasting hot. I watered everything I could – veggies and flowers, and the tree we just planted. Luckily we have a well to water with.
I’m so glad you are enjoying the pics. I love bringing them to you!

Oh, such a gentle waterfall. It must be lovely to wade in the pool at its base. I have been to some waterfalls in the western ghats (mountain ranges)of India and got bitten by leeches!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Shailaja,
We don’t have leeches here thank goodness. I did wade in the pool of the waterfall when I was there. The water was just right – not too cold.
      Thank you for visiting!

  5. I love waterfalls. Something about them is so beautiful and soothing. I’ve never gotten (is gotten a word?) to stand under a waterfall…and that is something I really want to do. Your pictures are gorgeous! I especially love the one of the leaf dangling on the edge of a rock. If I was at that waterfall right now, I would definately be sitting in that pool of water! P.S. Don’t hate us Pennsylvanians, but our weather has cooled off a bit. Over night it went down to 65 degrees, and right now, this evening, it is about 72 degrees. I think it only got to 80 today. It is quite refreshing. But, we have paid our price with the heat and extreme humidity as well this summer…but not as bad as you guys have!!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Bonnie,
Our evenings haven’t been too bad lately, but the days are so hot and windy. It’s like a dragon breathes on us every time we step out the door.
Glad you liked the waterfall pics – thank you!

Those falls are just beautiful. We’re going to be getting really warm her in the next few weeks. I might have to come back for a quick cool refresher from you lovely pictures.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Teresa,
Supposed to be a scorcher here early this week. I’ll have to look at the pics again too! 🙂

Just came across your blog and love it! These pictures are so refreshing. We are in Osage County so not far, will have to check this lake out one of these days.
    Thank you for sharing.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Marilyn,
Thank you! Hope you can visit the lake- in the spring, the area around the lake is full of wildflowers, and very pretty.

Those waterfalls look wonderful, and you have really captured the essence of the water!
I have never been to the Flint Hills, but hope to go this fall. Chase County is in the Flint Hills, isn’t it
There are so many parts of Kansas I have never been to!

I found this quote, “Here in northeast Kansas this week,” and stopped reading…..Hello from Seneca! Who/where are you?!

  10. Melanie says:

Wonderful pictures–but sadly–I’m not feeling the cool!! We are HOOOOOTT! and everything beautiful is burnt like my kids’ toast!! Praying for a cold front!!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Melanie,
For us, it’s supposed to cool off by the end of this week, but between now and then, it’s like there’s a dragon breathing fire all over us.

  11. Honestly, that is just beautiful! I do love waterfalls and I can’t think of a place in NJ where there is something like that to just swim! I know there are rapids but nothing that just ends in a pool. Beautiful!

      Hi Crazy Suburban Mom,
Thank you – there are a number of waterrfalls in KS. I’m surprised by how many there are here in the “flat and boring” state. 🙂

  12. How pretty! Wish I could jump right in an cool off!
    Your pictures are amazing!

    Suzanne,
Being a former Kansan still in love with the prairie, I happened upon your website through PW, and I love love love it. I am a photographer too, and have never learned to take a really good wide-angle view of a prairie landscape. Have you read PrairyErth by William Least Heat Moon? It’s all about Chase County. I loved it. Your pictures warm my heart.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Patricia,
Thank you so much for your kind words. So glad when my pics are enjoyed, as I enjoy taking them. The prairie landscape is a toughie for me too. It’s so hard to accurately convey the vastness and sweep of the prairie. A panoramic might do it. My husband has The Prairy Erth, but I’ve not had a chance to read it yet. Maybe when things slow down this winter.
Thank you for visiting, and come back soon.

  14. Hi Suzanne, What a lovely blog you have. Beautiful pictures. I am a Kansas girl, too. And I am writing a contemporary fiction series set in the Flint Hills. Would love to visit more with you! http://www.deborahvogts.blogspot.com

      Hi Deborah,
I’ve not read your books, but looking at your site, they look like something I would like to read. I like a good love story, but not a trashy read, so your Christian books would be a good fit. So glad to see that someone is writing something that anyone can read, and is not smutty.
      Thank you for stopping by,
      Suzanne

  15. Hi Suzanne. Thanks for writing back to me. Please do check into my books, as I think you’d enjoy them. You should be able to find them at your local library or at any fine bookstore. Blessings to you & your readers! Enjoying your blog. 😉

Hi! Where is this fall located? I am from southeast ks and wanting to visit. What town is it close to?

    • Suzanne says:

It’s just west of Cottonwood Falls. Pull up a map of that town, and look west – you’ll find it. Thanks!
