The Barn Cats and Kitty’s New Stunt

Here are two of our barn cats.

That’s Emily on the left, and Black and White kitty on the right. Emily is about 2 years old, and Black and White has been here for years. We’re not sure how old she is. Neither of them are tame, and we’ve never been able to pet them.

They’re both raising families right now. Emily has 2 half grown yellow kittens, and Black and White has 5 newborns. That’s why both of them have very serious looks on their faces.

We’ve got kids who are sucking us dry. Every time I lay down I got 5 hungry little mouths attaching themselves to me.

We feed them every morning, so they have plenty to eat. Emily’s kittens run every time they see me, and Black and White has hidden her kittens, so I’m not sure where they are right now.Β  They live on the edge of the wild out in the barn with our resident raccoon and skunk. Mama skunk raises kids in the barn every summer, and the raccoon hangs out with another of the barn cats, Furry. They are best buds.

And then there’s Kitty, our house cat.

She’s never had kittens. She hates all tomcats, so it’s not likely she’ll ever have a family. So she has time to pursue her hobbies. Right now she’s taken up tree climbing.

Go figure. She’s lived here for over 2 years and she spends a lot of time in the yard, but only this week has she decided to to climb trees.

Every day she climbs a little higher.

From her perch high up in an acacia tree, the young lioness looks out over the African plain. In the distance an impala herd catches her eye. She looks for the young, the weak, an easy target. She’s not eaten in days, and this may be her last chance before starvation overtakes her.

Yeah sure whatever, Kitty. Get down out of the tree and come into the house. It’s time for your evening feeding.

Haha. Tell me another! I think Kitty makes a most innocent looking young lioness πŸ™‚
PS. Kitty scared me stiff, and the comment got posted elsewhere πŸ™‚

Too cute. I loved the “young lioness looks out over the African plain” blurb.

  3. Kitty’s owner is funny. πŸ™‚
Just look at the size of that tree! It has to be quite tall.
Your barn cats do look quite serious. Wish you could find those kittens. My favorite past time growing up was stalking mother cats on our farm to find out where they’d stashed their kittens. No fear as a child. I was always sticking my hand down between bales to pull out the kittens. My mother would be like, “what if it was a skunk?” Well, I’d let go! Ha! Love you Kitty posts.

      Hi Gardener,
It’s a maple tree, and while the trunk is big, it’s not very tall. It’s more of a spreading tree. I’ve thought about looking for Black and White’s kittens, but she’s kinda growly so I don’t want to bother her.
      Thank you!

Ha! They are all lovely cats. What will you do with several wild kittens?

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Glyndalyn,
Since the mama cats are half wild, we never get near their kittens. We see glimpses of them at the feed bowl, but never get to know them.

Your photos look SO real, much better than mine!
I enjoy all your comments with the pics too!
Always enjoy posts about cats, or most any animals for that matter!

  6. What a great post! I have dogs on my post today! They are doing Life Guard duty and practicing for Baywatch!

How cute. I love when they play jungle kitty!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Teresa,
Kitty plays jungle kitty a lot. She tries to take down impala(us) in the living room on a regular basis by jumping out from behind a rock(couch).

  8. Totally a National Geographic moment with Kitty up in the tree and your description of the Lioness! I love it! You are so funny! That’s cute that she has a new trick. I wonder if she will get up so high that you will have one of those moments like in the cartoons where the fire department has to come and get her down???!!! P.S. I can’t believe the difference between the look on Kitty’s face and the look on the barn cat’s faces…so completely different! The barn cats are definately looking like they are saying “don’t mess with us”.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Bonnie,
I’m afraid she will go too high, but not to worry – hubby is a volunteer fireman, so we are covered.
The barn cats always have that serious look. I hadn’t realized though how different they look from Kitty’s devil-may-care look until I took these pics.
      Thanks for visiting.

I laughed out loud and with great kitty understanding. You know them so well. πŸ˜‰

  10. Stephanie says:

They have really beautiful eyes and look really adorable! The stray cats here are dirty, skinny and ‘homeless’. Your barn is really a blessing to them πŸ˜€

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Stephanie,
Even though they aren’t pets, we do try to take care of them best we can. I hate to see homeless cats.

  11. Doe of Mi. says:

Love your post. Barn cats definitely look like they could get defensive. But, at the same
time are hoping for some breakfast.
Kitty looks soooo proud of herself. πŸ™‚

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Doe,
They are funny in that they ask to be fed and growl at me at the same time. Sort of a “feed me” but “don’t get to close to me” kinda thing.

  12. Melanie says:

HAHA!! What a life–hope kitty doesn’t get too big for her britches and not be able to get down!! I’m sure the fire department won’t think she is as cute as we do πŸ™‚ We got cats this week too, for the first time in YEARS!! My kids are loving them–will post pictures sometime soon!!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Melanie,
Too late. Kitty is already too big for her britches, like most cats I know.
      Enjoy your new kitties!

  13. Wow, I have never heard of cats so wild that you could not pet them. But then again, I live in suburbia. Wow. What does your pet cat think of them or more importantly what in the world do they think about him?

I really probably wouldn’t fare well in the country at all.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Topaz,
Yeah, if they are born, and never see people, they are basically wild animals, and scurry away like bunny rabbits.
Our housecat, for whatever reason, doesn’t tolerate the barn cats at all, and chases them away from the house every time she sees them.
      Thanks for visiting.

  14. Julie says:

That is hysterical. Those barn cats always have attitude dont they? And kitty and her new trick is too funny. She is a mess that one. How funny.

  15. kerri says:

Love your kitty pics and captions. They make me chuckle :)Kitty is a real beauty and feisty besides.
We have 9 barn cats…all very friendly but they have all been handled and petted since kittenhood. Several of them think they should be house cats and spend most of them time lounging around on the back porch or somewhere close by.
We have 2 house cats as well who are thoroughly spoiled.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Kerri,
I wish our barn cats were more friendly, but the mama cats aren’t friendly, and so their kittens aren’t tame either.
Our house Kitty on the other hand….well enough said. πŸ™‚

  16. rebecca says:

have you ever had a picture of Furry and the racoon?

    • Suzanne says:

      Hey Rebecca,
Not a raccoon, but one time she thought she could take down a skunk. It was a face off, with neither of them willing to back down. Fortunately, the skunk lives in the barn and is used to cats, so it didn’t spray her. That was a close call.

  17. Jan says:

My opinion is I’d rather meet your barn cats than Kitty with wild African eyes. Love your kitty stories.

Are Emily and Kitty related? I love reading your blog!!
