Goat’s Beard

A few weeks ago Western Salsify bloomed alongside our road spreading cheer with its bright yellow blooms.  And now there are large seed-heads, similar to dandelion seed-heads, dotting the landscape.

One of the plant’s common names is Goat’s Beard which doesn’t make any sense until you see the puffy tan seed-heads which do resemble the chin whiskers of a goat.

They look delicate, but are actually kinda tough. They are 3 inches across, and you can huff and puff ’til you’re blue in the face, but you won’t be able to blow the seeds loose. After all, they have to put up with our delightful Kansas winds.

I have a plant called goat’s beard as well, but it doesn’t look anything like that. Your pictures are beautiful. I love the sun in the background.

Thank you Teresa. Hope all is well with your goats. I can’t remember their names, but there were 2 that hadn’t been feeling well, and I hope they are better now.
