Country Cemetery At Night

The area where we live here in northeast Kansas was once more heavily populated than it is now. Settled in the 1860s, the rural population grew until the turn of the century, but the numbers have declined ever since. As we drive through the countryside today, Harland often points and says, “There used to be a house there…… and one there too…I’m told there was a farm there…a house on that hill…”. It’s sad.  A few miles from our house, there is an old country cemetery.

There is no church nearby or town, just a cemetery surrounded by cornfields and pasture.

It’s thought there may have been a church here at one time. There are only about 50 headstones there ranging in age from the 1870s to the present.

I enjoy being outside in the evening. And for some time I’ve wanted to take pics of old tombstones at night. And this weekend seems a perfect day to show you these.

 Spoooooooky….

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

Great idea to take those night shots. It might be a township cemetery. There was one not far from the farm where I grew up. It wasn’t connected with any one church. When the area was first settled, someone donated the plot of land for the cemetery.

I love old cemeteries. We just visited Christ Church cemetery in Philadelphia in September, where Benjamin Franklin is buried. Such old years on the gravestones.

I love your cemetery pictures, they must have been taken during the “blue hour”. I like going to old cemeteries and looking for unique headstones, some are so interesting. You take the best pictures, love your blog too. Thanks, Sandy

Very fitting for the weekend!! We grew up near a cemetery just like that in the country. Our 4-H group took care of the mowing every summer. It was so cool to look over the headstones. .Funny, I stopped the kids by on our way home Memorial weekend to let them snap some photos too. .yours were way up there in the spookiness factor though. .very cool!

My parents are buried in a cemetery just like that, most of my Step Mom’s whole family is there. And yes it also is circled by grain fields and a gravel road. In the middle of no where, about 3-4 miles from their orginal farm. Which had a wood cooking stove that was still in use when I was a teen ager(back in the 1950’s).

Wow that is beauty with the stones at night and all asleep and in peace. Wondering what type of life they lead or where they were going.

  15. Cool photos! I love the last one with the evening stars! That is awesome! Old tomb stones are fascinating..I have taken a few photos of some as well.

I can’t believe all the stars in that last photo. The sky is never that clear where I live. Too much light pollution. Great photos, all of them.

Very good shots- a couple are creepy, even though they shouldn’t be…

I found these pictures comforting, the photographer used a great perspective in her shots.
