New Year’s Eve, and The Day After

Harland and I don’t celebrate New Years eve. We can’t stay up that late anymore. In fact, you’d have to pay us to stay up ’til midnight.

Well…..that’s exactly what happened, so then we had to stay up. Harland was hired to photograph the New Year’s festivities in Manhattan, KS. They like to call themselves the “Little Apple”, and so every year they drop a large lit-up apple down a pole. A crowd of about 10,000 turns out to see it. Luckily there are barriers put up to keep the crowd at bay, and luckier still, we were allowed on the non-crowd side of the barriers.

So Harland clicked away as the festivities progressed,

the countdown began, the apple dropped, the fireworks went off,

and the crowd went crazy.

I played photographer’s assistant and carried around cameras and a tripod. But I was able to take a few pics with my cellphone camera to share with you. After it was all over, we headed back to our hotel and turned in at 2am. I don’t remember the last time I was up that late. Argh…..

Then we got up again at 7am to go photograph bald eagles catching their breakfast at a nearby lake which was a fantastic experience (I’ll share pics later this week). Then we drove home.

By 4pm, we had both ground to a halt, and fell into bed for a nap.

Kitty joined us.  She’s a big believer in sleeping in the middle of the day.

So that was our New Years.

How about you?

  • Follow Harland as he does the evening cattle chores.
  • Bald Eagles on the wing.
  • How to make coasters out of ceramic tiles.
  • Apple-Raisin Folds: A recipe from a 1951 cookbook.

Sounds like my kind of New Year’s! We saw the ball in NY drop because it does it at 11pm Texas time; then, we went to bed and were sound asleep in less than 30 minutes!

We stayed up only because my son said we would be babies if we didn’t.
    Who took those last pictures?

I’m getting too old to stay up too! We watched the Help…and when it was over around 11:00 I had planned to go to bed, but…since all the cousins were sleeping on our living room floor, I ended up joining the fun. Until 12:01. That was all I could manage! 🙂

    Nice pictures.

  5. Happy New Year! I don’t remember the last time we stayed up past midnight. Then, you were up early for more photos? Wow, I can see why you needed your nap!

Sounds like you were the key grip! Looks like fun, but, exhausting, too.

We were in bed by 11:30pm, but still awake to kiss in the New year 😉
I enjoyed your post….looking forward to ALL the upcoming posts! I used to watch the Bald Eagles every January back home in Kentucky. An awe inspiring experience! Love the photos of you all & Kitty! Thanks for sharing so much of your personal life!

For the first time in MANY years, I was actually awake when midnight came! I was laying in bed caught up in a magazine article but turned the light out shortly thereafter. However, someplace in my neighborhood came the sound of LOUD fireworks, which caused my little 15-yr. Bichon to get whiney and nervous so I had to settle him down again. Yeah, a real rip roarin’ celebration for me. ;o)

Glad to see your bloggers block is gone! I’m going to try your bread recipe tomorrow and I’m not a good bread maker but the pics help. Thanks so much.

I stayed up util 2:30 am making cinnamon rolls for the neighbors since I didn’t get to it during Christmas. I stopped long enough to watch Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin eve. Happy New Year to You, Harland, Kitty and farm animals!

I was in be by 10 p.m. I think. I live in the big city and we have all the tourists, fireworks, traffic and crazy people. We stay home maybe have chips and dip and some wine and turn in early. I agree with you I don’t remember the last time I was up that late. We normally get up at o’dark-thirty to go to work so we are use to early bedtimes. Boring huh?

    Happy New Year!

My daughter’s very first home as a newlywed was in Manhattan KS as the wife of a newly minted Army officer!

It was a cute college town if memory serves me well. I remember a big red apple logo painted on a tower(?) as we drove into town from I-70.

I enjoyed your pictures and a chance to reminisce. I’ll share this post with her.

Glad you were on the non-crowd side of the barrier! I love the nap pictures. We were with friends at a farm in Robinson playing music, and singing until late. We all decided we were glad we didn’t stay up as a rule…lots of nap-taking the next day.
