Walking Tour

For some time I’ve been meaning to take you on a tour of our place, but never could get around to it. Well, today was a wonderful day here. It rained all day. Settled in and just rained and rained and rained. I went out with an umbrella this morning and splashed about in the puddles and walked all around. I came back inside, but couldn’t stay away from the glorious rain. So I went back out, this time with the camera and walked up to the barn where the heifers have their calves in the spring and starting from there, took a tour of our little place. So here you go-

A walking tour in the rain:

I talked to Harland afterward about the exact age of the house. When it was originally built, it didn’t have the dormer window upstairs or the mudroom on the front.  He said it was built without plumbing or electricity, and judging by the types of nails and lumber, he thinks it was probably older, more like about 1900. It was built as the hired man’s house, and when the landowner’s house burnt in the early 1900’s, the landowner moved the hired man’s house  down the hill and set it on the burnt house’s foundation. The stone in our basement is still black in places from the fire.

So far today, we’ve had 3 inches of rain, the most moisture we’ve had at once since last fall. The pond’s level up the road has come up today, as has Terrapin creek – it has water flowing in it, something we’ve not seen since spring.

Just a wonderful day.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

Love the sound of the rain. Was so hoping that we would have a nice steady rain like that set in today, but no such luck. Maybe tonight…

    Hi Suzanne,
I have followed you for quite some time now, and LOVE your blog. I think it always lowers my blood pressure to come here!

My sister is the one who told me about this blog. She and I are both in North Carolina, so it is very interesting to read about a place quite different from where we live. I especially love your animal stories, especially kitties and cows. My husband and I are cat lovers too.

Thanks for this walking tour of your farm. I noticed you splashed in the puddles in your sandals. Ha! I do that too.

Blessings to you and your husband. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.

I absolutely enjoyed our rainy walk together, along and up and down the driveway.
It’s fun tramping through the puddles in flip flops. It’s nice how secluded you are way out in the boonies….would suit me just fine. Thank you for the tour of your lovely farm. Glad you got the much needed rain.

    Hi Suzanne,
I am the sister of Lynne from NC, who posted a comment above this one. We really do enjoy your blog. We talk about things you have mentioned or shown on the blog when we get together for lunch, etc.
I enjoyed the rainy tour of your home. So lovely! Loved seeing the lay of your land AND hearing your accent. You should hear our “NC foothills” accent!! Ha!!
So glad you have been blessed with rain!

  5. Thank you for the tour! The rain has been wonderful. Over 3″ here too. It is amazing how plants are already responding as you mentioned the grass will start to green up again. I swear our front lawn was already looking green this evening. Funny to feel humidity today too. It was nice to hear your voice as well as the rain drops. It looks like you live in a peaceful corner of the country. Have a beautiful Sunday.

I’m so glad you are finally getting some rain. We’ve been inundated down here for the past couple of months apparently, though I wasn’t home to see it. Been home since Monday and not a drop since then!! Love to be out in the country. After all, I am a country girl.

Thanks for the tour Suzanne! I loved hearing that sound of rain on your umbrella as you walked down your driveway. What a wonderful sound…glad you’re finally getting a substantial amount!! I think mowing sounds like a pretty good trade off! 🙂

Thanks for sharing your farm with us, it makes me homesick for a time gone by. 🙂 I watched several of the videos and when I was watching the cows in the barn I wondered if you have help. I know mucking out a cow barn is hard work. I love cows. I used to stand by the fence because I wasn’t allowed behind it without my dad and the cows would come up to me and lick my fingers. 🙂 I would feed the baby cows with a bucket with a teat on it so I guess maybe they thought I had some on my fingers too. ;D I used to watch my uncle chasing the cows home from the fields into the barn in the evenings. I have so many memories. 🙂

Thanks for the tour of your little corner of the world, Suzanne! Brings back memories of my youth on our farm in Brown County.:)

  11. hi Suzanne! Thanks for giving us a tour…that was really neat! I enjoyed hearing your voice…I think I have heard it a little bit in other videos..but maybe just a snippet…this was almost like having a conversation! LOL! It’s cool to match the voice with the face. So, I do see you do have trees..haha..remember I was saying I envisioned trees..hehe. Anyhow, I like your farm. It looks very homey! When you mentioned the mud room, I had visions of Kitty laying on the dryer…cause you know, she’s probably tired and all, what with all the work she did that day! haha! This was cool!

Such an enjoyable post today, Suzanne. Looks like a nice homey place to live.

  13. Thanks for the walking tour in the rain. Puddle splashing/walking is still fun, no matter the age. It’s not just for children! Glad you are getting rain again. Would love to have some here in Oregon.

  14. Carol says:

Suzanne, I’m from Missouri too, you don’t have an accent, you sound like home to me! lol. I was surprised and happy, you had rain, woohoo!! What time of day were you out walking? I love the sound of rain and you splashing in the puddles! The animals must be so happy to have grass and a bath. Has your garden survived? I too, think you live in a lovely spot. I grew up in the middle of nowhere and enjoyed your tour. A calm and peaceful life is priceless! Did you work on the peaches yet? Can’t wait for that post, is Miss Kitty going to help? Peace be with you and Harland.

    • Suzanne says:

I took the video about mid-morning. My garden was ok this year, not the best. Some stuff just barely survived. I made peach jam Sunday and love how it turned out. Am thinking about making peach butter next. And no, Kitty didn’t help. 🙂 Peace to you and yours too Carol!

Thank you so much for showing us your place. I love it. I was so surprised you have a two story I had pictured a one story. We also got alot of rain and were so very grateful. Everything just loves a good old drink of water it really perks right up.I love your splashing in the puddles and your accent.

I really enjoyed the tour of your farm. It looks so peaceful and comfortable. And I know you all are as “pleased as peach” with the rain. Doesn’t it sound wonderful?
