A Very Painful Calf Birth – Part 2

So we waited for the cow to get up after having had her first calf, a painful delivery for her due to the unusually large head of the calf.

And we waited…. and waited….

And then –

.

.

So as you can see, Mama and Baby are doing fine as are the rest of the cows and calves.

Some of the cows are a little overprotective though…. more so than I would like, but better they be overprotective than ignore their calves.

Have a great day all!!

So glad this had a happy ending!

Very neat. How hard is it to stand and watch and not want to do something to help? That may have been the longest night I have spent since labor with my first daughter thirty-odd years ago. Animals are so interesting and differently abled than we are so it’s twice as fascinating to me.

Thanks so much for sharing your videos and I am glad you got away from the cows. Tell me, what will they do to you if they catch you? Head bumps? I gather they don’t Bite for defense and yet aside from their immensity-what have they got to defend with?

If they were really really mad and they caught me? They would probably stomp me with their pointy hooves. Their biggest weapon is probably their weight. These girls weigh about 800 pounds, older cows about a 1000. And they know how to throw their weight around. They can trash fences, gates, barn walls, farm trucks, you name it. A couple years ago a farmer was crushed against a tree by one of his cows and died. I heard about another guy this year who was kicked by one of his cows and he ended up with a broken nose. An angry cow is a scary thing.

Thanks Suzanne…this was fun! It’s not new to me, but I never tire of watching those new mamas and babies! Glad all is well. We also got a taste of that strong Kansas wind, and the mournful sounding train whistle. 🙂

Good to see a happy, healthy ending to the saga of mother and child!
I have to say though that I got the biggest chuckle from you getting away from the mommas in the pasture, especially when you let out your little noise when you perceived a possible trampling! I can see you doing it all! Thanks!

I was scared. Those 2 were after me – seriously. This group of heifers this year are all hostile and overprotective. Ugh. Harland was down at the house installing a screen door watching…he got a chuckle out of me being chased. he said, ” are the cows having fun at your expense?” ha ha, not. 😛

Thanks, Suzanne, for explaining what they’ll do. I’d be healthily afraid too. Been bitten by horses and have been fearful around them since.

For heaven sakes Suzanne, I was dreaming about cows last night. I don’t think I have ever said that before, Oh I know I haven’t said that before! I do love mysteries, thanks Suzanne for sharing the little family with us. 🙂

  7. Hey, I don’t blame that little one for not wanting to leave the barn at all!! It’s cold out there!!! Looks like you have lots of lovely little ones. As for being in the field with those new mamas? Ain’t gonna happen for this girl. Even though I grew up on a farm, I never did get over my fear of large animals. But, my brothers and Daddy took care of them and I didn’t have a lot to do with them, so that probably explains it. Also, I couldn’t milk work a darn, so that never got me over it either.

  8. Elizabeth says:

Thanks for sharing Suzanne! Did you get any spotted calves yet?

  9. Jeanne says:

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the first time I had to try to milk a cow by hand… It was quite an experience! I was always afraid of the cows because Holsteins are so big. At least to me they were. I was pretty young. Oh – did I mention that was the last time I ever milked by hand?!
