Kitty On The Hunt

I’m going to tell you a secret. But you can’t tell anyone. Promise? Ok.

You know we live in an older home with an even older foundation, think late 1800s.  We don’t live down there – we just store stuff. And the foundation is make from limestone blocks. And there are gaps in between. And we try to patch the gaps, but hey, the foundation is shifting back and forth all the time. There are gaps big enough for mice – but they stay in the basement and eat the poison we put out for them so we don’t see them. But that’s not the secret.

Here’s the secret:

The gaps in between the limestone blocks are also big enough for –

Blacksnake05

Mrs. Blacksnake…….Now don’t freak out on me!

The Mrs is smart enough to stay in the basement and not come upstairs. She’s been around for years and is probably good at getting the mice down there. Once a year we find a snakeskin shed by the Mrs.

“My how you’ve grown, Mrs. Blacksnake!”

“Why, thank you.”

But the big drawback to having the Mrs. around is that she likes to have her kids – in the basement.

And the kids are not smart enough to stay downstairs.

A few of them tend to come upstairs in the early spring. Two or three of them each year. In the pre-Kitty days, Harland would most often find them in the bathroom.

I love the story he tells about when he was in the bathroom one day taking care of business and he saw something move out of the corner of his eye – right at eye level. He turned to look and there was a baby blacksnake hanging from the shower curtain.

Twelve inches from his face.

And he was sticking his tongue out at Harland.

And Harland yelled.

What I wouldn’t pay to have seen that.  Anyway, out came the trusty pliers, and baby snake was taken outside.

Now, since the arrival of Kitty six years ago, any worries about baby snakes hanging from shower curtains are but a distant memory.

Kitty is always on the lookout for them.

And when she finds one?

Well, let’s just say she likes to leave her mangled trophies in the middle of the floor.

We call Kitty our little Snake-Killer.

Our Vicious Predator. Our Hero.

I think she deserves that fresh cream, Suzanne! Any kitty that kills snakes should be treated as a saint, and nothing less! 🙂

  2. It happens in old farm houses, but let me tell you, I didn’t like it one bit!! Mama always took it in stride, but me????????? Now, if she’d have allowed a kitty inside, that problem would have been solved but that wasn’t gonna happen! Glad Miss Kitty is earning her keep still.

Good Kitty! Poisonous or not, I would not want to see a snake in my house, so Kitty would get whatever she required from me to perform her duties!

  4. Tina says:

Amen! You go girl! Who needs a dog?

  5. Rosanne says:

We had a small snake in the house this spring. My cat just looked at it and walked away. Same for my little house dog. I think they need training with Kitty!! Such is life on the farm.

    Good Kitty! =)

She’s a snake charmer, that’s what she is.

  8. Sharon says:

I had a terrible mouse problem. Then the snakes moved in. I do not have a mouse problem anymore. I call it fair.

  9. Dianna says:

Oh, my. A few years ago, when we were “between kitties” we had two snakes – two different species, two different times – in our house. Eek…..
Glad Kitty is taking care of those little snakes for you. And I vote for warm cream for her too!

Snakes I can live with…..but a mouse and I’m GONE!!!!

Go Kitty, go! I couldn’t handle having snakes coming into my house! I got the shivers just seeing the picture of Mrs. Black Snake!!

    Lol on the Harland story!
Yuck on the snakes & mice!
So glad I don’t have to deal with them like you do!
Glad Kitty is on the job!
