Apple and Pumpkin Time

Kicking-Up-Leaves1

The days are getting shorter. The sun is still warm, but the air is cool. At night we turn on the heat and snuggle under our electric blanket. By day we turn off the heat and open the windows. The trees have started to turn, and the fields are dotted with combines and grain trucks bringing in the harvest. It’s Fall – my favorite season.

Time to put a load of manure on the vegetable garden and plow it under. Time to get ready for the return of the cattle from the summer pasture. Soon the calves will be weaned. Time to put the mower away and get the snowblower ready. Time for fall housecleaning and window washing. Time to make pot roast and potatoes for Sunday supper.

With the chill in the air, I get the urge to make homemade bread and pull out the apple peeler to make a pie.

Apples and pumpkins beckon to me in the grocery stores and roadside stands. “Buy us. Take us home and turn us into a pie.” And so in the last few weeks I’ve baked an apple pieĀ and made an apple cake(I’ll be posting the recipe soon!). I’d like to make a pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling, and some pumpkin sweet rolls. I also have a new recipe for pumpkin bread I’d like to try. Yesterday I found a recipe for apple cider donuts that I can’t wait to make.

I’ll share any new recipes I try in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, here are all the pumpkin and apple recipes I’ve posted in the past here:

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

I see our favorite pumpkin in the picture too! My mouth is watering for a pot roast for Sunday supper again. I have put an extra blanket on and the heater on very low but still holding off on the electric blanket. But I can tell its getting colder because now I have cats sleeping with me. Happy Fall!

I love fall! A friend gave me several buckets of really nice apples so I have been busy making applesauce and apple butter. My kitchen smells so good.

The old-fashioned picture at top of the page reminds me of pictures in an old, old school reader that has been in my family for years.
Did you find your picture in an old school book?
