Out In The Pasture

Calves11

Yesterday evening after supper, we walked out to the pasture near our house where the heifers and their new calves are. So far, 3 of the heifers have calved, with another 10 to go. Those who haven’t calved yet are in a pen near the barn, while those who have calved are in the pasture.

Harland had a bucket of grain to give everyone.

And the calves, all of them less than a week old, were feeling frisky and hopped and ran about, testing their young legs.

When newborn calves run laps around the pasture, it makes their Moms very nervous.

“Don’t run dear! You’ll attract the attention of predators!”

Harland was extra tired last night. Daylight savings and all this getting up in the middle of the night to check on the girls is catching up with him.

We went to bed early.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

I love watching the new calves kicking up their heels. We had a first calf heifer freshen this morning…with a little jersey cross. They’re so tiny, but lively, and I love their eyes. Your angus are beautiful!

Working in a t-shirt? I’m feeling a bit envious!! I am freezing my butt off! < if only it was that easy!!

    Harland needs a long nap…eventually 😉

Your calves reminded me of that wonderful video you did last year of the bison calves frolicking on the prairie. There are times when going to bed early is the only thing to do. This time change does get to me, too, even though it seems as though it shouldn’t.

  6. Sleeping is one of my favorite activities and cannot be indulged in to excess. We heal while we sleep, good stuff there.
