Pasture Hooligans

The calves are now a month old, and are starting to play as a group. It’s like a clique of friends in grade school hanging out. They push each other around, hop and skip,

and then set off running just for the sheer joy of it.

I lke the way their little tails curl up sometimes when they run.

Last night we were doing some yardwork, and watching the calves play.

.

I just love spring.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

  3. I can’t believe how agile they are! They’re just hoppin and skippin and a jumpin! That’s amazing to me…if you were watching from a distance, you just might think that was a couple of dogs running that fast. Seriously, I never knew they could run like that!! See what I learn from your blog?!

I just had to tell you! I was driving by a farm field the other day that had only mamas and calves in it, and I observed the “babysitting” that you mentioned going on! There were probably 15 calves with two mamas watching them in one end of the field, the rest of the mamas were way across in the opposite corner of the field! I had never noticed this before, but it must be common. Thanks for informing us about it!

      Hi Teresa,
I’m sure you see a lot of the same from your “kids” as well. Spring is such a fun time on the farm isn’t it?
