Horses In Nebraska

Sometimes the best photo opportunities are not planned. Case in point: A couple years ago, we were on a road trip in Western Nebraska. While traveling down a gravel road, we happened upon this scene.

It was nearly perfect. From the pale greens and browns of the grass, to the hills looming in the distance, to the clouds ripping along on the wind.

And the horses were some of the prettiest I’ve seen.

This is cattle country, and more than likely these are ranch horses.

They didn’t mind us stopping and taking pictures of them.

Even the fence was perfect for the scene.

These pictures soothe my soul. I’ve gone back and looked at them many times, wishing I could spread the soul-soothing around.

Hope these bring some peace into your day.

—> Up Next:  Since the heatwave is still on, we need to cool off, so we’re visiting the Chase County Waterfalls. Ahhhh….

Suzanne–I absolutely ADORE your pictures from the last two posts!! So many times it is so hard to capture the beauty of the moment–but you have done so beautifully!! Thanks for sharing-and I had NO idea that it gets so cold in Arizona–the beauty must be worth tolerating such weather extremes to the people that live around there!!

      Hi Melanie,
Thank you, and you’re welcome! I didn’t realize it got so cold in norther Arizona/sounthern Utah either until I went there.

  2. Suzanne, I agree with you…you never know what will come up that is so worth photographing! I try to remember to carry my camera with me even when I’m not going to need it. There have been so many times I’ve said, “I wish I had my camera.” These horses are beautiful and so peaceful. You did an excellent job! I love the perspective on the third photo! Also, the last photo made me smile..I love the way the horses head is tilted up.

      Hi Bonnie,
      Thank you!
I didn’t have my camera last week when a great blue heron was standing on the edge of the road. I stopped a talked to him for a while, and he just stood there. I could have just kicked myself for not having my camera.

  3. They are beautiful!!!
I try to take my camera along everytime we leave town. You never know what you’ll find!

  4. These are WONDERFUL! I love horses! 🙂

I agree with you. I hate it when I don’t have my camera with me. If it’s amazing enough for me to stop in my tracks and notice, then it’s definitely camera worthy! Beautiful horses!!!

    Hello Suzanne!

I just stumbled across your website today & read the whole thing in little spurts between working. It was wonderful! You have the perfect combination of ALL my favorite things: gardening, wildflowers, roadtrips, history, prairies, cooking, & cats! Amazing!

I have my own garden in the city & working it has been tough going due to the rocky, nutrient-poor soil, but it has none-the-less been rewarding. & some of the plants have thrived despite the odds! I can’t wait until I have a garden/land/space of my own to really get out there & grow vegetables I can eat all year long.

Finding blogs like yours by people like you continue to inspire me & assure me that I can one day do it too!

Sorry for the long reply, but I just wanted to say Hello! & that I look forward to following your blog!

      Hi Kate Zy,
Thank you so much for stopping by. Best wishes on getting your own spot of land. Everyone should have something to call their own. So glad if anything here helps you out or inspires you.
      Take care, and keep gardening!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hey Becca,
Actually they were grouped like that so they could talk about the weird humans who were taking their picture. 🙂

These are wonderful pictures. It’s nice the horses even wanted to pose for you.

You caught the horses napping!:) I know they usually sleep standing… but with their eyes open? Maybe they were curious to see what *you* were doing 😉 The photos are like picture postcards!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Shailaja,
Horses do sleep standing, but it’s more of a catnap. These horses were too curious about us to sleep.
      Thank you!

Just found your website through PW…I’m sure I’ll be back!
The gray horse in the photos looks identical to my mare Moon.
I noticed he was in the background when you started taking pictures of the herd. In typical equine fashion, he joined in as soon as he realized you were there taking pictures. That’s something Moon would do, she’s such a camera hog.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Michelle,
Thank you and Welcome! You are absolutely correct. Once we stopped to visit the horses, the gray one just had to come up to the fence too and get involved. “I’m ready for my close-up Mr. Demille”. 🙂

BEAUTIFUL horses! I love them. GREAT pictures!!
It looks so pretty out there! I’ve never been out West. Your pictures make me want to pack up and go see it for myself right now!
