Kicking Up Leaves

The summer is over,
The trees are all bare,
There is mist in the garden
And frost in the air.
The meadows are empty,
And gathered the sheaves,
But isn’t it lovely
Kicking up leaves.

John from the garden
Has taken the chairs,
It’s dark in the evening
And cold on the stairs.
Winter is coming
And everyone grieves—
But isn’t it lovely
Kicking up leaves.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

      Hi Kristina,
And I’ve missed you stopping by too.

What a cute picture! Where did you find it? Your poem is very sweet. I always love reading your post!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Peggy,
I found the pic by doing an online search for “vintage illustrations”. There’s a LOT out there.
      Thanks for stopping by.

We are bursting into summer here so it’s quite different. Can’t wait to see your winter photography. I am very interested in the landscape changes you will be seeing.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Kerry,
We actually had our first snow one evening last week. Luckily it didn’t stick, but it won’t be too long before we are shoveling the stuff. Last winter we received 15 feet total.

I love fall and I love kicking in the leaves. There are not as many here in west Texas as when I was growing up in Wisconsin but that dosen’t change my love of fall.

    Awful cute!

  7. Shailaja says:

I found kicking up the leaves enjoyable in my childhood but not anymore. I can only see the chore ahead, of sweeping the yard.:)

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Shailaja,
I have a solution for you: Move to KS. We have so much wind here that we never rake our leaves, we just wait for the wind to blow them off the yard. Works great.

    How sweet! Loved it.

Love this pretty little poem and I love fall. I only wish I didn’t have to go to an office job every day so I could enjoy being outside more, but I am grateful I have a job. I enjoy your posts and all the history that you include in your pictures from yours and Harlans travels.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

      Hi Stacy J,
I have an office job too, but at least have a window to look out.
Thank you for stopping by, and Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
