The Hitchhiker

Yesterday, I picked some daylilies to enjoy on my kitchen windowsill. A couple hours later, I noticed I had brought in a hitchhiker – a little crab spider.

What a cutie. His legspan was about a half inch across, but as far as he was concerned, he was 6 feet across.

I pulled out the camera, put it on macro setting, and put the lens in his face for a close up. He put up with it for a while, but then put his fangs out. “I’m done with my close-up Mr. Demille.” Crab spiders don’t build webs. Instead they lay in wait for supper, and ambush it when it arrives.

I put Mr. Tough outside when he was done with his photo shoot.

  1. Suzanne, I like the little crab spider. I shared this post with my 8 year old son. He liked it too! I swear I feel like I have seen one of these spiders before. I laughed at how you called him Mr. Tough! Too funny! I like how he put his fangs out…guess he thinks you are not too big for him to take a bite! Ha Ha!

      Hi Bonnie,
Glad your son liked the spider. Later this week, I’ll have another post about a little tree frog.
      Thanks for your visit,

I think he’s kind of cute, in his own spidery way. Spiders don’t bother me much. It beats the time my hubby brought a box in from our shed and let a mouse loose in the house. Hoo-boy…fortunately we just opened the door and it ran back outside. I’ve never let him live it down though. We always check boxes before they come inside now, too!

      Hi Janet,
My cat brought in a vole that she caught about a month ago. Unfortunately she let it go, and it took off and we couldn’t find it. Several days later a bad smell behind a cabinet indicated where it went. I had to find the body and dispose of it – yuck.
      Thanks for visiting,

You have great macro shots. He does look like he thinks he’s pretty full of himself. I admit, I would put him back outside too instead of stomping on him.

      He Teresa,
He was a tough customer, but cute. I didn’t mind him, but I do mind those great big wolf spiders- they creep me out.
      Take care,
      Suzanne
