Road Trip – Hermann, Missouri

Remember me?  That lady in KS who farms, gardens, cooks, and goes on road trips every chance she gets?  Yes, it’s me. I’m back.

So, hubby and I went away for the weekend to Hermann, Missouri to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Hermann, Missouri

We left Saturday morning, and got back yesterday afternoon. Soon after we arrived home, we left again to attend the annual local fire department picnic (Harland is a volunteer fireman- just another reason I’m getting grey hair). We got back home late in the evening. Long story short – I haven’t had a chance to go through my road trip pics. So today, I’m giving you just a preview of posts to come this week.

Hermann is a lovely old Missouri river town first settled in 1837- a German Society settlement. Many of the buildings in the town are from the 1850s and 1860s,

Hermann architecture

and are listed on the National Register of Historic places.

It is also well known as a winery area with about 10 wineries.

Before prohibition, the town boasted of 60+ wineries, and the one we visited, Stone Hill winery, was the 2nd largest winery in the world producing over a million gallons of wine annually. We took the Stone Hill tour, and enjoyed a taste testing afterward. Mmmmm…..

Our plan was to stay in a B & B, but all of them were full, and some too expensive anyway. I looked further afield, and found a house out in the country about 10 miles out of town nestled in the wooded hills.

Built in the 1920s, and situated on a dead-end road through a cattle pasture, we had the whole house to ourselves – 2 bedroom, one bath with jacuzzi, and full size kitchen. The owner had decorated the house 1920’s style, and filled it with antiques.

The view was spectacular.

Very charming and peaceful, and only $89 per night.

Just up the road there was the tiny town of Fredericksburg on banks of the Gasconade river. There is no bridge across the river, but hey, no problem – they have a ferry, so we just had to take it.

We had such a relaxing time in Hermann, and were sorry to leave our little house where we stayed, but on the way home, we stopped at an orchard, and picked up some fresh peaches,

a watermelon, and some homemade BBQ sauce. Later in the week, I’ll make a peach pie with homemade piecrust. I’ll have a post about that too.

I’ll do a post tomorrow about our little B & B house, and the scenery around it, including an 1800s log cabin. And later in the week I’ll have posts about Hermann and its sights, our tour of the winery, and much more. Stay tuned folks – don’t touch that dial.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

What a spectacular place to stay! It kind of reminds me of one of our anniversary trips quite a few years back in Fredericksburg, TX.

  8. How can we touch that dial when you are promising such wonderful photos and stories?!? I’m looking forward to it. I am so interested to see some photos of the house you stayed in. It looks so quaint, and yes that view…the rolling grass and trees…ahhhh, I love it. I loved the photo for the ferry, so rustic and casual…my kind of place. Hermann sounds like a great place to visit. I’m so jelly! (jealous)
