Oregon Trail Rose

I just have to brag on my yellow rose bush.

I planted this 3 years ago as a 12 inch high stem with roots, and today it stands over 5 feet high and is coverered with fragrant 2 inch blooms.

It’s called Harison’s Yellow Rose for the man who developed the variety back in 1837, but it’s also known as the Oregon Trail Rose for all the pioneers who brought cuttings of it with them on the trail. You can still find them blooming on abandoned farmsteads all over the midwest today.

In fact, my mom got hers from a neighboring farm when I was a kid.

And carefree is an understatement with this rose. I don’t water it. I don’t worry about it making it through our long cold winters.

Mildew? HA! It doesn’t know the meaning of the word.

Deer? HA! They take a nibble and then give up as this thing is well armed with tons of thorns.

I just love this rose.

I’m going to have to plant more of them.

Have a great Monday all!

PS:  Here’s where I got my rose if you’re interested in getting one of your own.

  1. fantastic!! I need something like that…because I am a slacker at taking care of outdoor stuff. I cannot believe how much you said it has grown in a few years!!! Wow!

Beautiful! I have a yard full of rosebushes that I do nothing to and they come back beautiful year after year. The old varieties are best. But this one I haven’t seen before. Now I want one to put with my other bushes. I’m going to go look for it when I go to the nursery next time.

It is beautiful Suzanne. With all the “Defence” it has I’d be careful where I’d plant it. Especially when you think about mowing the yard. I love your last photo so pretty, such a beautiful yellow.

    Beautiful!

  5. It’s beautiful! I love things that do well on their own and don’t need to be fussed over. (Is this the same one they call the yellow rose of Texas? ) I have no-fuss pink roses in my garden and I think a yellow rose might look nice with them.

Yup! It is a wonderful gift for all those who can’t seem to keep the modern roses going.

My late Mother loved yellow roses and I have been looking for just the right one to plant in her commemorative garden I started last year. This one will be perfect and it is just the right color. Thank you for sharing where you got it. xx
