A Little Bragging…

A couple weeks ago, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve down by Strong City, KS, held the grand opening of their new visitor center. We went down the next day to take a look around, and to see the photo display in the lobby.

Don’t I look smug?

I have to confess we wanted to see the photo display because the photos were taken by us, me and Harland both. They are a collection of images we’ve taken at the Tallgrass over the last few years. They will be on display for about a month. As a photographer, Harland has had his work displayed or published many times, but this was a first for me.

And I was a wee bit proud.

Just a little.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

You do look pleased. And you should be. On another matter how is the weather. We hear there is drought. And here in New Zealand there is starting to be discussion on how that effects prices for our farmers.

We’ve had several weeks of 100+ temps, and no rain. But finally last night we got a half inch and it’s cooler today. Supposed to heat back up to 100 this weekend though. We finally got an inch of rain down at our cattle pasture earlier this week. It’s so crispy and dry there it’s sad. Ranchers are selling off their cattle because they’ve run out of grass and cattle prices are dropping. Many farmers are having to cut their corn for silage because it’s not going to yield anything worth harvesting. We’re better off than some though. At least we’ll be able to harvest our corn, albeit we are going to cut some of it for silage because our hay crop was about half of normal.
