Antiques

Last weekend we found ourselves up in Nebraska for one thing or another driving around. One of the many small towns we drove through was Norfolk, where we had a little time to kill. So we looked for an antique store. It’s been a while since I did any antiquing and I was suffering from antiquingus withdrawalus, a well known illness. Look it up.

Anyway, we found an antique place bordering the railroad tracks in Norfolk’s old downtown. I didn’t get the name of the place, but I was able to find it on a map. Click HERE for the location and map.

Anywho, it was one of those antique stores that is packed from floor to ceiling with narrow walkways around and between the shelves. Antique paradise!

In the kitchen section, I found an old pyrex 10″ pie dish that looked like it had never been used.

I have one 10″ and have needed another for some time. Perfect, and I love how the handles turn down for a better grip when handling with hotpads.

Price? $4 Cha-Ching!

In one corner of the store was a pile of disorganized linens: quilts, napkins, doileys, aprons, etc. I dove into the pile and found a dresser scarf with a hand-crocheted edge.

Lovely.

Perfect for the dresser we have in our bathroom that holds towels and stuff.

Price: $4  Cha-Cha-Ching!

After sorting through the apron pile I found this one made from an old flour sack.

Plain and functional. Perfect.

Price: $6  Cha-Ching-a-roo!

I headed to the cash register to pay for my treasures where I asked the clerk/owner what Bon Ton Flour was? He replied that it was an old flour mill that used to exist in Norfolk. Later when we returned home I looked it up online and couldn’t find any Bon Ton aprons like mine. I’m guessing maybe it was a promotional item of some sort.

Me: Hey Harland, take a picture of me jumping.

Harland: No.

Me:  Oh, c’mon.

Harland:   No.

Me:  C’mon, I’ll jump up into the air.

Harland:  Sigh. Ok, go.

Me:  Wow, I can do better. Looks like I only got about 6 inches off the ground.  C’mon, take another pic of me.

Harland:  Sigh. Ok, go again.

Harland:  You look like a paratrooper coming down.

Me:  And it still looks like I only got about 6 inches off the ground. I’d better quit while I’m ahead before I do myself an injury. I’m too old for this, I’m practically an antique myself. Let’s get out of the middle of the road and go back into the house.  It’s time for us antiques to go to bed.

  2. Oh my gosh! I love this post! First of all, I love the pics of you jumping…that is awesome…and refreshing, cause it’s something different! Well, not that jumping is different..haha, but putting a pic of you jumping on your post is different…and I like different! Different is GOOD! So, Harland sighing and saying no, that is what my boys sound like when I try to get them to help me with a photo that I can’t do myself cause it wouldn’t be physically possible…like holding a hot pie out of the oven and taking a photo at the same time! I love that apron! I love aprons so much..and the pie dish is great! Good finds!

Thanks Bonnie. And this is the road right in front of our house looking north. On the horizon to the right is Harland’s family place where the farm is. Sometime I’ll take some pics of the different views around our place and the farm like you did on your blog.

The pie plate is a gem of a find. Good job. I love the jumping pics, too. I think your blog has some of the best unusual pics on it and this just adds to the elan of the whole package.

Yes, love antiquing. Two weeks ago came home with a great find, was so happy about and proceeded to drop it and it shattered…. Oh well…. Keep it up.

What fun finds! Don’t you just love it when you find treasures? Harland is a good sport!

I see you jumping for joy, over there in Kansas. Love your purchases, very cute! You are the funny one, I would fall down and lose a tooth in the gravel!

You are a crack-up!! So funny jumping. I love it. I also have to confess to going to the kitchen stuff in the antique stores too. I just got sets of lace placemats and was so thrilled at $2.00 each. Love the apron, but the real steal is that pie dish. I got a set of four pyrex bread pans at a yard sale for a quarter each.

    • Suzanne says:

Oh, I get lost in the kitchen stuff. I don’t even know what half of those old antique kitchen utensils are, but I want them all….

  8. Girl, you are jumping up and down wearing flip flops on a gravel road!! If I had tried that I would have twisted an ankle and ended up with gravel up my nostrils. I want to go antique-ing with you. You know where the good shops are.

I find that the smaller the town and the further it is from a large city, the cheaper the antiques will be. Also, the more cluttered it is the better. The clean tidy spacious antique stores are to be avoided…they know what they have and what their stuff is worth. This place in Norfolk was dusty, cluttered, and there was no air conditioning. (Thank goodness it wasn’t hot that day.) It was a perfect place for the antique shopper who likes good buys. Think of yourself when you’re antique shopping as an “American Picker”. Our Garmin is a gem for finding antique stores. We just ask it for places to shop and specify “antiques” and it comes up with a list. What a wonderful invention!

  9. Great deals. Love all your finds.

Very cute jumping in the road.

Thank you Gardener. Is your garden limping along like mine is this summer? I’ve managed to keep everything alive (i think) but I can’t say it’s been a good garden year.. How about you? Our cattle pasture is northeast of you and it’s crispy.

      • Crispy is the word. We’re trying to conserve water to keep the city from having to impose more restrictions. I’ve brought plants in early and abandoned some. I’ve lost some small evergreens that just couldn’t stand the heat. We got a little rain Tuesday and have a chance today. Plus, we’re in a cool snap. I think I need to give up on having tomatoes. I have garlic and onions in storage but nothing has gone into the freezer from this season. I did plant some lettuce, radishes and kohlrabis this week and have some sprouting already with the cool snap and rain. Maybe a fall garden? Hope you can find a way to keep the cattle well during this time. I understand the struggle for the farmers and ranchers. Tough year. Hang in there!

        • Suzanne says:

Didn’t realize that Topeka was having water restrictions. That’s hard cause then you have to decide what to save and what to let go? Probably not going to do a fall garden. Been watering all summer and am tired of it all.

Those are great finds! I like old aprons, linens, and pie plates, too. And I also just bought some. We visited Lancaster County PA -Amish Country. They had great antique and thrift stores. Enjoy your blog and photos and Harland’s photos on Facebook.

    • Suzanne says:

Don’t you just love finding good places to antique? Never been to Lancaster county, but would love to go some day.

  11. Peggy says:

Oh my gosh too funny! Love the jumping! Love anything with hand crochet! What a lucky find!

    • Suzanne says:

I run into a lot of hand crochet in antique stores here. It always makes me sad that some family member didn’t want to hold on to it, and it ended up at an auction or store.

Great finds indeed. I have the antique sickness as well. My sis and I seem to go find some when we are out together. Jumping fun indeed. Thanks for sharing! Feeling like an antique? Me too after we were with our little grandchildren yesterday, watching them run around in a park…fun but boy, we were wore out by evening but loving the littles anyway and remembering when our children were little. Sigh! Thanks for sharing! Hugs and have a great week!

    • Suzanne says:

Kids make us feel younger don’t they? Part of God’s design I’m thinking so we don’t feel old before our time. 🙂

  13. Nancy says:

You look so cute jumping, Suzanne! Hope you didn’t seriously hurt yourself.

  14. Jeanne says:

Suzanne, the more I read of your blog, the more I like it! You have so much fun! I love the story about going antique-ing! That apron is TOO cute!! Do you use it? I was amazed at how high you were able to jump. Glad you didn’t seriously hurt yourself. My 1st #1 Daughter and I and two friends went poking around in an antique store the other day. We had a blast!

    • Suzanne says:

Oh I love antiquing, but don’t go as often as I would like. And yes, I do wear the apron! Love it! Thanks for stopping by Jeanne!
