New England Vacation – Day 9

Day 10 of our vacation found us in Machias, Maine. After 9 days on the road, we were running out of clean laundry, so we found a laundromat, and spent a couple hours taking care of our dirty laundry.

Day Ten13

Haven’t been to a laundromat since I was a kid, so I was shocked at how much it is to wash and dry a load – $10!  Fortunately, the capacity of the machines was about 50 pounds, so we we easily able to get all our laundry done in one load.

While the drier cycle was going, I walked across the street to a little park area near a bridge called Bad Little Falls State Park.  Not a bad place to kill time while waiting for your laundry to dry, eh?

Day Ten14

Once our laundry was neatly folded back in our suitcases, we were ready to hit the road again. Our first stop of the day was Roque Bluffs State Park right on the coast. We sat on the beach for quite a while, just mesmirized by the waves going in and out.

Day Ten03

This little seagull followed me for a while looking for a handout. I felt sorry for him as he appeared to have a deformed foot and dragged it as he hobbled along. But I didn’t have anything to give him.

Day Ten04

Watch the waves for a little bit in the video below. It’s very relaxing.

Reluctantly we left the waves and headed down the road to our next stop, a little fishing cove. The tide was going out and we watched the kelp gently waving back and forth like prairie grasses in the wind.

Day Ten18

Lunchtime!   We stopped at a little place alongside the road in Harrington, Scovils Millside Dining.

Day Ten19

Don’t recall what Harland had – looks like fish of some sort deep-fried. I had fried shrimp and we both had fries and slaw too.

Day Ten20

Ketchup is Harland’s favorite condiment. Seldom is a meal eaten without it.

After lunch we stopped at a little fishing cove in Cape Split Harbor.

Day Ten07

Day Ten08

Low tide is the best time to get a good look at sea-life.

Day Ten05

Day Ten09

A short drive brought us to Otter Cove (below).   The tide had gone out further by this time and the kelp was fully exposed laying flat out on the rocks.

Day Ten11

There was a little building here the fisherman used. Seemed rather precariously balanced on piers, especially at low tide.

Day Ten12

Day Ten10

Our last stop of the day was Fort O’Brien Historic Site south of Machiasport.

Once a complete fort with cannon, barracks and earthworks, it served to protect the Machias River area and surrounding towns over the course of three wars: The Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, and the Civil War.

All that remains today are the earthworks and building foundations.

Day Ten29

Our home-away-from home this night was at Micmac Farm. We had a little cabin down a gravel road surrounded by woodland east of Machias. We stayed here on our last visit to Maine a few years ago. One of our favorite lodging places of all time, it has a little bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. It’s such a quiet peaceful place.

Day Ten28

We slept soundly.  ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz……

UP NEXT:  A sunny day at last!  We visit a theme park named Wild Blueberry Land,  and Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park where we see the waves crashing on the rocky coast!

Stay tuned…..

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

The wave video was a nice way to spend my coffee break!

I cannot believe a Laundromat is $10.00 to wash and dry! Shows you how old I am….It looks like your stay on the ocean was kind of cold and grey but there is nothing better than to watch the waves. It is hypnotic. The meal portions of fried seafood and fries was enormous! Yummy!

I was shocked too, whilst I was recently waiting for my new machine to be delivered I went to a launderette for the first time in years too and it cost £14.00 (about $22) for 1 wash and dry cycle!!!

PS.Your video is beautiful, so soothing.

Now you have me wanting seafood. Guess I’ll get some fish out of the freezer for dinner tonight. 😉

I thought you got a deal on the laundromat. Here in Philly we usually pay $15. I don’t use it often for that reason.

My family lives in Maine. They love it there. I think I would love it in the summer and fall, but I don’t think I could take the winters they have. It was great seeing the video.

I am loving going along on your trip. I show your posts to my husband each night and he loves it too. Thanks for these great posts.
