Autumn Fires

Autumn Leaves - By John Everett Millais - 1856

In the other gardens
And all up the vale,
From the autumn bonfires
See the smoke trail!

Pleasant summer over
And all the summer flowers,
The red fire blazes,
The gray smoke towers.

Sing a song of seasons!
Something bright in all!
Flowers in the summer,
Fires in the fall!

Robert Louis Stevenson, 1913

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

That’s a nice painting. It is interesting to know that people paint and write about autumn leaves.

I still have my book, A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert L. Stevenson, that I have had since
my childhood. I am turning 71 on Christmas Eve.

To Elaine – I have Robert Louis Stevenson’s book that belonged to my father( and I’m a grandma) and have always loved the poems.

Suzanne- The picture above and the one with the “Kicking up leaves” poem tell a whole story don’t they?

  4. Thanks for posting this poem. I always enjoy a sweet poem…and I love vintage postcards, pictures and such.

      Hi Bonnie,
I’ve always liked the older illustrations and postcards, and also enjoy poetry, so I started a new category and will do poetry posts every weekend from now on. Stay tuned. 🙂
