The Road Not Taken

This has always been one of my favorite poems. To me, this poem is about taking the road in life that fits you, and not necessarilly following the latest fashions or popular culture, but being true to yourself and your beliefs.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

  1. aw, I have never read that poem before…I love it! For some reason I have always been the person that doesn’t want to follow all the trends. I mean, I do follow some trends, of course, otherwise, I wouldn’t have a computer and facebook and a blog!! But sometimes when things are too popular, I back away cause I don’t want to be a mindless drone.
    P.S. I’ll be posting a poem by John Updike very soon.

      Hi Cherie,
      I first heard it from my mom who would sometimes read poetry aloud to us as kids. I don’t know that I really listened back then, but it must have stuck in my brain, because this is one of my favorites too.
