Peonies In Bloom

Remember the peony buds? ย Well, they are in full bloom now. We have pink ones by the door, and white ones in the front and back yard.

The pink ones I brought with me from Missouri where I lived before coming to Kansas. But the white ones were already here, planted by the previous owners which would have been sometime in the 1960s.

Here in the midwest, peonies are often planted on graves as their bloom time coincides with Memorial Day.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

I read somewhere that Memorial Day, sans Decoration Day was once on the last Thursday of May but in 1971 was changed to the last Monday. My peonies didn’t bloom until the Thursday after Memorial Day so I think they are on the old schedule.
    Love the photos!

Oh, these pictures are so delightful that I can almost smell them. I love the way you captured the sun backlighting them.

How interesting that in the mid-west they are often planted on graves. That conjures up a pretty picture. Here in coastal New England the peonies started to bloom about June 1st!

I just love peonies! They smell so sweet…just wish they stayed nice when they’re cut…and that the ants wouldn’t stay on them after they’re open! Mine won’t look very pretty after tonight’s rain…I think they’ll be done for. ๐Ÿ™

Why won’t mine set on and bloom? I get nice greanery, but seldon get buds and blooms. I am by the OK-KS boarder.

  7. Oh, how lovely! I love, love, love peonies but they don’t grow in Florida. So, I just have to enjoy them on the rare occasion I’m in their vicinity when they’re blooming. Just returning home from the midwest where they were in full bloom.

My white peonies in the back year are done for the year. I have one left out by the front door. It is like a variegated pink and white. The smell is sooo sweet. These were my Dad’s favorites. I didn’t know about planting them on the graves to mark Memorial day. What a sweet gesture. They take three years here in Lexington, KY to set and blossom. They were with the weight!!! Thanks for sharing…..

Growing up in Missouri we always had Peonies for Memorial Day. My mother would cut the bud with the long stems attached and wrap them in a bundle with newspaper and wet paper towels, put them in our extra fridge in the basement. The day before visiting cemeteries she took them out of the fridge and put the buds into buckets of water over night. Sure enough we woke up to buckets of full blooming Peonies. We would make hooks out of wire coat hangers and hook them over a can filled with water and push the hanger in the ground to stabilize the can. After trimming the length of the flowers to fit the can and adding water, from containers,we had a lovely display at the graves. All of the above can be done from the trunk of the car. Sorry Suzanne for using so much space. I thought some body might find this process helpful for next year. Your pictures made me happy and a little sad. These are my favorite flowers and I miss them, like another reader, I can almost smell them!
