Pest Control

This morning I was getting ready to put on my make-up and I looked down and there was one of the largest wolf spiders I’ve ever seen just standing there on the heat register.

Cue the Olaf scream:

So I slowly carefully opened the door to the cabinet below the sink, pulled out the sink clearer spray bottle, pulled the area rug away from the spider (don’t want to bleach the rug you know) and started spraying. He made a sloppy wet run for the bedroom with me in hot pursuit spraying all the way. He didn’t seem to be slowing down so I finally resorted to removing my slipper and giving him a good WHACK just as he crossed the bedroom threshold. I used a paper towel to remove the body from the floor and deposit him in the trash. Then I stood there trying to recover from my exertions.
.
I looked up to see how my roomies had reacted:
.
Kitty was laying down on the bed peering over the edge with wide eyes enjoying the show. In the other direction,  Harland was in the kitchen calmly munching away on his cereal and reading a newspaper.
.
“Aren’t you glad you didn’t marry a squeamish wife?” I asked.
.
“Sure,” he replied without lifting his eyes from the newspaper, and continuing to crunch away on his cereal.
.
SIGH….

I had to play the Olaf screams several times you know! Yeah, big spiders are not welcome at my house either!

Oh Suzanne, here’s my tip for you, and it works equally well for spiders or wasps. I just grab my can of super-duper freeze hair spray and give them a paralyzing squirt or two. They really hate it. Of course you are going to have to wipe up a sticky spot, but hey, I think that’s better than bug guts! Lol

Suzanne … You make me laugh … You have a wonderful sense of humor … Absolutely love your “Olaf” touch!

    • Suzanne says:

Part of the reason I threw that in (besides the fact that I love Olaf) is that my friend Glenda says I sound just like Olaf when I scream. I think Disney copied from me. 🙂

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkk…do you hear me? I HATE spiders, especially those huge ones. The larges one I ever saw was…in Kansas…when I was visiting my sister years ago. What is it about them??

    • Suzanne says:

yeah…we make em big here, not something to be proud of…. We also have scorpions in south Ks, but fortunately none here in the northeast part of the state.

So good to see you posting, Suzanne – this is hilarious!

Hair spray my favorite weapon of choice for bugs! The old fashioned stuff. Kind of leaves a little cloud around your head and holds your hairdo in place for 12 hours! Right next to the bluing agent for my hair. Ha ha ha! You made me laugh today…

  7. Yeah, good to not be squeamish about bugs. At least for me, cause my DH is less than enthused about dealing with them. City Boy that he is.

    • Suzanne says:

Harland just has the “live and let live” attitude and that “there’s room for all God’s creatures”. I have the attitude that if if has lots of hairy legs and it’s in my house it needs to be eliminated.

Great to see your post, and nice to have a good laugh at the end of an evening. I’ve gotten over my spider phobia, but that doesn’t mean I’m fond of them. I’ll admire them outdoors, if I see them first. The only thing I can’t take are those big garden spiders that leave their webs across paths, so you get a faceful of silk.

I’m part of the hairspray brigade, too. It works on the big outdoor roaches we call palmetto bugs, too. It can take a good bit, but eventually they gum up so much they can’t run.

I just squish them but I hate the ones that jump just before you get to them. I just know it’s going to jump right onto me. Then I have to do this crazy gyrating/ shaking thing and make a lot of noise (i.e. cue the Olaf). Palmettos; I try to walk them to the coop and watch my girls go crazy over them. Banana spiders give me the shivers. My sister’s reply to a recent FB picture I posted was to saddle it up and charge for rides – like pony rides.

Ah, thanks for this one! It was fun! Ugly spider, though! (Aren’t they all ugly?) Hairspray does work, but it leaves a mess. I was in the bathroom the other day, when in ran this spider. I called to my daughter to bring the fly swatter, which she did!. I moved the items he’d run under and – WHACK! – he was a goner! But then I had the mess to clean up! He was fast, too!

I enjoyed all the comments, too! Take care, Suzanne!

    EEEWWW!!!!!
I like the Olaf sound effect, Suzanne. Seeing a computer image of a large spider is much easier on the senses than encountering one in person.

    Here’s my wolf spider story:
I don’t remember ever seeing one in person until a few years ago, when I was still living in Kansas. My Darling Husband and I lived in a drafty antique house in the small town of Independence. Anyway, one evening I started to do the dishes so I picked up the first dirty dish. A HUMONGOUS SPIDER!!!!!! I dropped the dish (thankfully it was plastic as I remember) and squashed that thing! No way is there room in my heart for a spider unless the spider is outdoors. 🙂 At the time I did not know what kind of spider it was, so I looked it up online.
We also had black widow spiders in the garage. Those got exterminated also. I left them alone when I saw them in the garden and yard.

    Hi Suzanne!
    So glad you posted!
I HATE spiders! I can tolerate them outside, as long as I don’t have a close encounter with one!
Inside, no, the only good ones are dead ones!
However, my cats love to see them on the wall, go into stalk & attack mode, with huge pupils & twitching hips, lol! So sometimes I let spiders entertain my cats for a while before I wack them, if they don’t dissapear first.
Does kitty stalk spiders and/or bugs on the wall?

    • Suzanne says:

Yes, Kitty kills all bugs in the house. She’s the perfect exterminator. She would have gone after this spider but I found it first.

  14. Carol says:

My goodness Susanne, that spider was big enough to ride!

  15. Brittney says:

Spiders are the worst. I believe I would have screamed louder and longer. A whack with the shoe usually does the job pretty well! Thanks for sharing.
