New Siding Project – Part 8

Remember the siding project we started on the house back in 2013?  That’s ok if you don’t. It’s so long ago now, we don’t hardly remember it either.

Our plan was to remove the old sidewalks and an old outside basement entrance, bury the electric drop, put in a patio and new sidewalks,  rip the two layers of siding off the house, put in some foam-board insulation to cut the drafts, put on new vinyl siding, put in four new windows on the south side of the house to replace ones that are probably over 40 years old, replace three leaky windows on the north side of the house, and replace the front door.

We started this project two years ago, and worked on it for a couple months. Back then, we removed the basement entrance and the old sidewalks, put in a patio and new sidewalks, and buried the drop.  Last year we were preoccupied with life, death, and illness, and we never got back to our project.  But in the next couple months, we are plowing ahead full steam to finish this project.  We have the siding, windows, and door ordered. Yesterday, we went down to Topeka, and bought the foam-board insulation.

Here we are, happily tootling on down the road to Topeka. Harland is concentrating – we’re pulling our goose-neck trailer.

And here we are safe and sound back home. That’s 60 sheets of one inch foam-board.

Siding Project (2)

This will be added insulation to the house, but will also cut the wind. We burned through about 1200 gallons propane last winter and we only have about 1000 sq ft living space. We shouldn’t be using half that many gallons. The heat and air both just run and run and run, and we’re soooo looking forward to putting a stop to that nonsense.

Harland will start ripping the two old layers of siding off the house soon, and I’ll be back then.

Ta ta!

I forgot about that Kansas wind. You all will be rolling in “doe” when all is completed! giggle…

I love it when people do their part in putting a stop “this nonsense”! I am wondering if there are any hidden bits of history treasure buried in those walls….for me it would turn this into a fun project, what will we find under this section about to be removed. Will be anxiously awaiting your wonderfully real life writings, as this project progresses.

Yeah, me too. One of the layers of siding to be removed will be the original 100 year old clapboard. It’s like an archaeological dig. 🙂

You’ll wonder why you ever bought so many blankets when you’re finished! 🙂 Just replacing a bunch of windows did wonders in our old house…although there’s still a lot that needs to be done.

At first I wasn’t sure if I remembered the previous siding updates, but as I went through the “reminders” I found that I did! I hope all goes well as you do your work. I’m looking forward to seeing it all! Especially when the ancient siding starts to come off

You’ve got quite a project ahead of you, but you clearly have the skills to cope. It’s going to be fun to follow along, and see how things evolve.
