A Winter Dawn

A WINTER DAWN

Above the marge of night a star still shines,
And on the frosty hills the sombre pines
Harbor an eerie wind that crooneth low
Over the glimmering wastes of virgin snow.

Through the pale arch of orient the morn
Comes in a milk-white splendor newly-born,
A sword of crimson cuts in twain the gray
Banners of shadow hosts, and lo, the day!

-Lucy Maud Montgomery 1874 – 1942

When I was in my teens, I saw the Kevin Sullivan production of Anne of Green Gables with Megan Follows in the lead on PBS and was captivated. I bought the movie on VHS and have watched it so many times I worry the tape may fall apart.  I have all the Anne books and have read and re-read them all numerous times.

And while I knew that Montgomery also wrote poetry, I hadn’t read any of it until yesterday when I found this poem. It so perfectly captures a winter morning.

Are you a fan of Montgomery’s writing? Have you seen the 1986 movie with Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst?  Do you still watch your VHS tapes keeping your fingers crossed that they won’t fall apart?

I have them but I watched them on You Tube a few weeks back. Have you seen the ones when she is all grown up? She actually goes to Europe to find Gil when he is in the war! I think my favorite part is when she is teaching at the college and turns the town up side down with kindness!

      Hi Elizabeth,
I’ve seen all the episodes they’ve done. My favorite sad/happy part is that same one you mentioned that takes place during WWI and she is looking all over for Gilbert, and when she sings “let me call you sweetheart” he recognizes her voice and comes forward out of the crowd and they fall into each other’s arms. I cry every time.

That picture is beautiful! I’ve never been a big Anne of Green Gables fan, but I still have a collection of VHS tapes that I actually watch.

I love this picture! It reminds me of where my brother in law is from in western Kansas. That’s the only place I’ve ever been able to see “forever” in four directions.

I love Anne of Green Gables and so does my adult daughter. We still have shows taped from PBS. It would be nice to have the series on DVD.
Love your photography. Haven’t been on your blog for awhile. Thought I’d pop in since I saw your comment on the Pioneer Women’s post.
I have her cookbook and love it. Now to get her story would be great!

You could not have found a better poem to go with that beautiful photo. So pristine. Love it.

My answers to your questions are yes, yes, and yes! I saw Anne of Green Gables on PBS and loved it. A couple of years later my dad gave me the VHS version. I watched it many times, and then watched it with my daughter. My dad died a long time ago, and I still have the tapes (Anne of Avonlea too). I haven’t seen the ones after Anne married Gil, but they sound wonderful. Maybe we should get the DVD version, just in case.

Oh, I forgot. Your photo is gorgeous. But cold!! I need hot chocolate now. 🙂

I love the Anne of Green Gables movies too! You have inspired me to watch them again 🙂 I may have to hook up our old VCR, or treat myself to them on DVD. You should too! http://www.amazon.com/Anne-Green-Gables-Megan-Follows/dp/B000XSKDH4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295817239&sr=8-2

We were on Prince Edward Island about 4 years ago. Not only visited the house where she lived and wrote, but also walked through the woods and by the cabin foundation where the stories of Anne took place. Markers with quotes from the books were placed along the trail. A great
    place.

  11. Kristi says:

I first taped the Green Gables series on PBS years ago, then finally had the VHS tapes for ‘real’. My girls and I watched them ALL over and over, especially on ‘snow days’; we would have an Anne marathon. I cry every time Matthew dies.

  12. Sally Bishop says:

Big fan! I saw Megan Follows on a cop show as the mother this year. It took me a bit to figure out who she was. What else has she been in?

  13. Glenda says:

I just recently found your Blog and I am enjoying it very much!

We loved Anne too and once our daughter had a home of her own, she bought the tapes. I watch every time it is replayed on PBS.

  14. Beautiful post. Yes! I love the Anne of Green Gables movies. My daughters and I watch them repeatedly. So good. 😉 Thanks for sharing the poem.

  15. Eliza says:

I read Anne of Green Gables and loved it. However, I am ready for spring to get here- Winter is old and tired! (and cold) 🙂

  16. Oh yes…Anne of Green Gables! Me and my little sister saw that back then…and we loved it! We were so hooked! I was 16 in 1986, she was 12. When she became an adult she bought the VHS Anne of Green Gables. I know she has watched them a lot. If I had the tapes, I would have watched them too. I no longer have a VCR. I believe we finally got rid of ours about 3 or 4 years ago…only DVD now. You know what other movie I absolutely love…Little Women…the one with Wynona Ryder. Have you seen that?

    • Suzanne says:

      Bonnie,
Oh my gosh yes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched Little Women with Wynona Ryder. One of my very favorites. I cry every time they show the scene after Beth dies and Hannah is sprinkling the room with flower petals. Oh how I have a good bawl over that one. I just watched it in December when I was putting up the Christmas tree.

Love Anne, Love Emily, Love Jane, Love Marigold. I still reread L.M. Montgomery and cannot wait until I can share it with my daughters!
