Rain On A Tin Roof

Yesterday we finally received a much needed spring rain. Most of the day there were gentle showers washing off the dust and gladdening the daffodils. When I got home from from work, Harland was already home (yea!), and met me with a big ole bear hug.  Then I changed into my farmgirl clothes, minus the winter coveralls(hallelujah), and we set off to do the chores. We headed a mile down the road to a field he had been planting in corn before the rain. He had left a truck behind when he drove out of the field in the tractor. We drove off the road and along the grassy waterway bumpity bumping along past an old fence with crooked wooden posts, and around a badger hole with freshly dug out dirt.   When we reached the pickup, Harland got out and then we both drove back out of the field and onto the road.

We stopped at the farm so Harland could feed grain and hay to the cattle. I went into the house to visit with my mother in law, Rita. When I came back outside, there was a pretty good shower going on. Harland was on the tractor feeding hay, and so I stepped inside the little grain shed to keep from getting wet. (I might melt tee hee.) I stood there listening to the rain on the tin roof and smelling the warm grain with molasses. The heifers near the shed had already been fed their grain, and I could hear the soft sound of them licking the last crumbs up.

“What luxury,” I thought. It wasn’t cold, there was no wind, and I looked out over an increasingly spring green world.  The birds sang their spring songs.

Later, when chores were done, we headed into our little snug farmhouse for supper.

We are so blessed.

      Hi Mary,
I don’t envy your mud, but we could use more rain. It’s awfully dry here. Rain over snow is appreciated any day.

We are in desperate need of rain. Wildfires have been popping up. We’ve had wonderful spring weather for a couple of weeks but rain would be welcome.

Love this post! The house we lived in when I was growing up had a tin roof. Nothing better to put you to sleep at night!

Our house has a metal roof on it, but we don’t hear the pitter patter unless we are upstairs Dianna. Love the sound.

Glad you have some warmer weather. We do as well, 60 yesterday and almost that today. Went out for veggies/fruit at a farm in country, loved it out there with some flowers blooming in green house for sale, which I didn’t buy but loved smelling and just re=energized me! Maybe spring is here? Will see, it’s supposed to be raining again on Sunday! Oh well!

I think spring is finally here. Harland pulled out the mower and worked on it yesterday. We’ve had a few warm days and the grass really shot up. We’ll have to mow soon.
Glad you enjoyed your country outing Becky.
      Take care,
      Suzanne

  14. aw, Suzanne, I feel like I know exactly how you were feeling at that moment. I have felt like that before…just taking in the sights and sounds and smells of where you are and how much you appreciate it and love it. It’s those little every day things that make home, home! Those details are quite precious and I can tell that you love those things and appreciate those things. And coming back to your cozy farm house…that is sweet..it’s that home sweet home feeling and that warm and fuzzy feeling in your heart…and life is good…I know exactly what you mean!

Love the sound and you described it so well. As others have said it just makes you glad to be alive. I get that rain on the tin roof feeling watching a sunset in my husbands arms. So glad Harland is back with you too.
