Are The Fish Biting?

Sometimes at a public fishing hole….

fishermen who have had a successful day will let other fishermen know of their good fortune via some low-cost advertising.

After cleaning their fish, they hang the remains on a fence near the fishing hole.

The non-verbal message here is not only that the fish are biting, but how big they are too.

Not sure how long fishermen have done this,

but it does make for a gross, yet effective advertisement.

And it makes for an interesting photo op for 2 strange photographers out on a Sunday drive in the Flint Hills of KS.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

Never knew about this “advertising”! LOL!

  4. Jody says:

More likely to hang them far away from the fishing hole, as they would not want to give away the location of a productive fishing hole.
The standing joke with the fishermen in our family whem asked where they caught their prize fish was always “Milner Ford.” That was the same as to say, “I’m not going to tell you where I caught them. Find your own fishing hole.” 🙂

That seems like a rather strange and stinky tradition.

  6. Alyse says:

How are there no vultures hovering around? Surely that must create a big stink. ew.

Wow! Did you laugh when you saw this? A weird, creepy sort of laugh? It’s not any different than the dead deer and elk heads the yahoos around here mount on the front of their trucks in hunting season. Something for the ‘Far Side’ comics.

What a bizarre thing. So these are “extra” catfish that they didn’t need?? They look like the whole fish, not just the remains. Then why not throw them back? It just doesn’t make sense to me. Disturbing!

  13. Louise S says:

Took a closer look. Now I see they’re just the heads. I still think it’s bizarre, lol.
