Peonies After The Rain

Yesterday was a rainy day, but that was ok because we needed the rest after working cattle all day Saturday.

I slept in until 8:30 and then had a leisurely breakfast.

Harland checked the heifers and found that Cleo in the maternity ward was in labor, so he got her into the barn out of the rain.  A couple hours later she had her calf. Then we went to church, came home and had burgers for lunch.

In the afternoon I went out with my camera to take pics of Cleo’s calf and got distracted by our peonies which are just starting to bloom. They looked so fresh and pretty covered in raindrops.

I did finally make it up to the barn to see Cleo. All the other cows and calves followed and crowded around me, and I had to shoo them out of the way so I could take pics of Cleo. What a cutie her calf is. I’ll share pics soon.

Back at the house I made pork chops for supper, folded some laundry, and we finished the evening with a little tv.

A perfect day.

Hope you had a nice relaxing Sunday as well.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

Your peonies are so pretty! Mine are still at the bud stage, but it won’t be long. Can’t wait to smell them!

Your peonies are beautiful! My grandmother always had peonies in her yard — white ones, but the pink is great. Hers was always covered in ants though. Do you have the same problem? If so, what do you do about it?

I don’t get rid of the ants…they disappear when the buds open. The Heartland Peony Society has a good explanation about ants on peonies:
“Do not try to get rid of the ants on your peonies. This is a natural and temporary activity. It is believed that peonies produce small amounts of nectar and other ant attractants to encourage ants to help in opening the dense double flower buds found in many peonies. The ants may be found covering certain varieties and avoiding others, this is totally normal.Once the buds have opened the ants will disappear – also normal.”
