Hawksbill Crag

The first full day of our little vacation in Arkansas, we hiked the trail to Hawksbill Crag, an overhang of rock jutting out over a wooded valley. It’s a popular place to visit and take pictures and there were a number of people on the trail that day.

The fall color was at its prime.

The trail wound down around in a valley where it was really still and kinda hot, but as we got closer to Hawksbill up on the top of the mountain, there was a stiff breeze, and wonderful views overlooking the valley.

I’m nervous when it come to heights, but Harland is fearless:

When we got to the Crag, we took turns standing out on the edge and taking pics of each other.

Here’s me:

I’m afraid of heights, but the rocky ledge isn’t as precarious as it looks. It’s actually wide and broad -about the size of a small back yard. I just didn’t go too near the edge.

And here’s Harland:

Here’s the view from out on the Crag:

It’s hard to convey just how big it all is and how high up we are, but Harland is providing scale in the above picture. See him over there at the edge of a ledge on the right?

Look here:

See him? He’s only about a quarter inch tall.

The walk back down the trail was hurried as it looked like it might rain and we had all our camera equipment with us. The trail, two miles round trip, was rocky and hilly too, and we were really tired and footsore at the end of it, but it was a good kind of tired.

Later that afternoon, we hiked another two mile trail because we are gluttons for punishment.

We slept very well that night.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.
