Fetch

All is well in our feline world.

Kitty and Muffin have settled into a daily routine consisting of (in no particular order):

  • Sleeping:  Kitty is the queen of this. But her sleeping routine has been upset by a certain little furball who either keeps her from sleeping (“play with me!”) or wakes her up (“play with me!”). Muffy sleeps, but not as much as the queen.
  • Playing: Play consists of wrestling, biting and chasing. Kitty is stronger and heavier so she wins the wrestling and biting competitions. But Muffy is faster and lighter so he wins the chasing competitions.
  • Eating: Kitty would LOVE to be the champion of this event, but the cruel primates won’t let her eat as much as she would like. She’s been getting a little too round, so she’s been put on a diet. Muffy, however, can eat as much as he would like, but gets distracted easily and doesn’t eat enough. (“too much to do, no time to eat!”). The primates have to lock him in the bathroom with no distractions so he’ll eat enough.

Kitty has assumed a motherly role for the squirt. She’ll share her food with him, come running if he is in distress to console him, clean him regularly, and sit by looking quite proud as he plays nearby. She lets him do whatever he wants to her – jumping on her, waking her up to play, biting her – but she has one limit: her tail. She won’t let him play with it. So of course he seeks every opportunity to grab hold of her tail -much to her irritation.

Something Muffin started doing recently has been quite a surprise to us. Neither of us has ever had a dog that would do this, let alone a cat:

Now you might ask how we trained him to do this. Ah, well…..we didn’t. He trained himself. One day he began to bring me his “dead” toy mice dropping them at my feet and crying. I was kinda dense at first and didn’t get what he wanted. But one day, I threw the mouse across the room. He ran after it and brought it back to me again. And that’s how it started. He will play fetch until our arms tire if we indulge him. He just loves it. Silly boy.

The silly boy is taking a trip to the vet today for his second round of vaccinations. The doc will also be checking on his, ahem, boy parts, to see if he is ready to be neutered yet. The secret to having a tomcat in the house who doesn’t spray is to have them neutered as soon as possible, so we’re quite anxious to get this done just has soon as he’s ready.

We had one cat that would fetch. Just like you he taught himself and chased a small red yarn ball. Your video is like déjà vu. We also had one male cat “fixed” very early, but it didn’t stop that one from spraying everywhere, inside and outside, and it’s so smelly and hard to get rid of. We finally had to move him to a friend’s farm to be a barn cat. I’m sure you won’t have problems, but it is possible. We also got a kitten and we were so surprised to see how active (and young acting) our sleepy old adult became.

    aaaaaaaaaaaa!
    Muffy is soooo cute!
I love your post and the video is such fun!
    I laughed with delight!
So funny how he licked your ankle….attacked the camera and “stalked” his mouse!
He seems to be growing into all that fur.

I have not experienced a cat who fetches, my cat watches me throw and fetch. You have the best luck with cats. Do you think he might stalk a real mouse after Kitty teaches him all she knows?

When I was a kid, I had a rabbit foot that was given to me. My orange cat claimed it for himself. He too taught himself to fetch. He’d drop it in my lap and I’d let if fly across the room. He’d go running after it flinging it in the air and whatnot. And, then he’d bring it back to me for another round. But, I’d make it interesting by flinging it into different areas of the room. He LOVED it.

Such a cute video. And, yes, you definitely want to do everything possible to avoid having that “spray” in the house….. been there…..!

What a fun end to my cyber-evening. My Dixie doesn’t exactly play fetch, but… If I throw a little mouse to her, she’ll bite off the tail, eat it, and then take the carcass in to her water bowl and drown it. Yes, she holds it down with her paw until it doesn’t float any more. Then, she comes looking for another mouse!

This really is such a joyous story to follow. Quite a delight.

What a cute story! It’s really neat that he wanted to fetch all on his own, and it made such a great video!

I hope he did well at the vets!

I got such a chuckle out of Linda’s story about her Dixie “drowning” her little tailless mouse!!

My cat did that for a time…really fun and cute!

It’s cute in the picture that he is keeping her warm!

My Murray used to play fetch, for hours! During one point in his life I was living in the MIL suite at a friends house. One morning, J. asked me what I was doing making all that racket last night. I, confused, said I was on the computer. J. looked at me like I had four heads. Cue Murray with toy in mouth and dropping it at my feet. I picked up said toy without even thinking about it and threw it down the ‘laneway’. J. started laughing like a lunatic and said “Curiosity solved”. Murray weighed in at about 18 pounds of busy beauty and fun.

Muffin is a doll! My cat Lola also loved to play fetch but only likes to do it with a ball of paper, especially receipts. She will play until either your arm falls off or the paper becomes too soggy. Cats are a trip and so much fun. Glad he is fitting in. Hope all went well at the Vet and I am sure his upcoming “man” surgery will go well. Thanks for sharing your lives with all of us. Love and Prayers!

  15. We had a Siamese cat that would fetch. So fun.
