Kittens In The Barn

A while back I showed you a few of the barn cats, among them a female we called Black and White. A friend of mine said that she looked like Hitler. I reasoned that because she is a female, we couldn’t call her Hitler, so we started to call her Eva Braun. Eva had kittens some weeks ago, and has kept them hidden from us. But they’re old enough now to start to play and frisk about. I took my camera up to the barn the other day to get some pics of them. They’re very wild, and run away at our approach like little bunnies. So I sat down behind a haybale and waited. In about 15 minutes they appeared.

They relaxed somewhat and began to look over the newcomer.

They began to play with Eva.

Eva, despite her unfriendly appearance, is a good mama.

She is very protective of her little ones, and kept growling at me just to let me know who’s boss in the barn.

The kittens wanted to have lunch, but Eva was reluctant to while I was there.

Finally though, she settled down.

A contented purring filled the barn. I left the family alone and went back to the house.

That Eva can give a look cant she? My husband calls that the tuna eye. LOL The kittens are adorable. So colorful. Wow. Everyone of them. Are they considered calico? Cuz if their calico arent they all female? I thought I read somewhere that calicos are almost always female. That its a rarity for them to be male. And if they are male they are usually sterile.I love kittens. I want one….

      Hi Julie,
There are 5 kittens total and I think 3 of them are Calico. It’s my understanding that Calicoes are all female too. I wish they were tame.
      Eva always has that look.

I’m scared to let my cats into our barn because of the rattlesnakes in there. The barn is only used for storing stuff now. I let the cats in the garage and they are great mousers, so I guess if I let them in the barn, they would reduce the number of rodents and then it wouldn’t be so attractive to the rattlers. A quandary. Meet Cat King Cole and Mango at:

      Hi Cindy,
I checked out your blog – Love your cats. We let our housecat Kitty outside, but keep an eye on her as we have coyotes too.

So adorable!! Don’t you just love kittens?

    • Suzanne says:

      Leslie,
So soft and cuddly, but I have to imagine with these. Eva would probably rip my heart out if I touched her little ones.

  6. Teresa says:

They are just adorable! And the way the look, you’ll have plenty of kittens in the future.

I like the off-center ink smudge below Eva’s nose! Here, the belief is that cats move their kittens “seven times” for safety. I have seen the stray cats in my neighbourhood (the equivalent of your barn cats) do that at least a couple of times. Do your barn cats follow the practice, too?

    • Suzanne says:

      Shailaja,
Eva moved her kittens at at least 3 times. One time I saw her moving them, and the next day I found a kitten she had left behind. They were teeny tiny then, and I was able to pick it up and take it to Eva. She looked at me with her evil look, picked up her kitten and put it with the rest of the litter. I’m sure she wondered why I was holding one of her lovely babies, and had no idea she had abandoned it.

I also have heard and have observed that calico cats are always female. They sure are cute but, you may have a ton
of barn cats sometime in the not to distant future. Yikes.
We had cows so my Dad always fed our barn cats w/milk to
supplement the rodent & bird menu.

  9. Melanie says:

When I started reading I thought “how can a CAT look like Hitler” but by darn she was right!! I laughed out loud! She’s got an evil eye for sure! Cute kitties.

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Melanie,
I’ve known Eva for 3 years now, but it never occurred to me she looked like Hitler. But she sure does.

  10. Tom G. says:

Hitler? Nah, I would have said Charlie Chaplin as The Tramp.

  11. Raul Wassell says:

Gotta love kittys, you got to see the youtube video link I left, it is so freaking adorable!

  12. Louise says:

Is there anything cuter than a kitten? I don’t think so……….except maybe a puppy.

  13. Debbie Hauserman says:

Suzanne, I live in Wichita and volunteer at the Kansas Humane Society. It came to my attention one time that there were several felines that had Eva’s markings like a mustache. Some people call them “Kitlers”. If you google that you will see all sorts of Kitlers online. I always call them Kitlers!
