Kitty’s New Hat

Before Christmas, Harland said he wanted to photograph Kitty as Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. About a year ago, we dressed Kitty up as a turkey, and since she enjoyed that so much (not!), the reindeer idea seemed like a good one to me. Alas, I was not able to find any reindeer antlers in the store in Kitty size, but I did find something better.

An Elmer Fudd hat with a fleece lining and earflaps.

Perfect to keep her ears warm when she slips outside in the winter. Once we got it on her (it was a 2 man job), Kitty made disgruntled sounds to let us know just how displeased she was with the antics of the humans.

But before we took the hat off, we decided to give it a test drive and send her outside. It’s been snowing here all day and about 20 degrees – a perfect time to find out if the hat will keep her head warm.

Kitty:   BUT I DON’T NEED THE HAT!!   I HAVE FUR AND MY HEAD IS PERFECTLY WARM WHEN I GO OUTSIDE!!!

Me:   Shhh Kitty, this is research.

Kitty:   *Grumble grumble* …. Alright, already – let’s get this over with!!

I expected Kitty to sulk by the door when she went outside, but instead, she forgot all about the hat because there were birds hopping about in the snow.

Kitty:   “K – kk – kkk”

Kitty:   “K – kkk – kk -kkk”

I’d say the hat is a success, wouldn’t you?

Happy New Year everyone!

How funny! I have a cat, but there’s no way she’d let me put a hat on her. I just found your site because I’m moving to Kansas soon. I googled “gardening on the Kansas prairie” and somehow ended up with your blog. I’m so glad!
